Ragging in colleges

Dear Editor,
Just when we think that ragging of first-year students, an annual ritual in almost every academic institution, has become a thing of the past comes the report which sent shivers down our spine — of a first-year nursing student alleged to have been ragged severely, and “made to consume toilet-cleaning liquid”.
Whatever be the findings, it is a fact that the savagery inflicted on a hapless youngster only results in psychological ill-effects. Ragging smacks of moral and ethical atrophy. Colleges, the police and governments should view the issue seriously, especially as the report says that most colleges are known to sweep such incidents under the carpet.
