Raids intensifies against polythene, 50 kg seized

Division of State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has intensified raids against hoarders of polythene bags that are banned under Jammu and Kashmir Non-Biodegradable Material Management, Handing and Disposal Act 2007.
In the last couple of days team led by PCB Divisional Officar, Kuldeep Bhan raided numbers of shops at Batote, Chanderkot, Karol and Ramban markets and seized about 50 kg of banned material. The raiding team
comprised of officers of Municipalities and Police Department.
During the seizure drive the public and shopkeepers were made about the menace of using polythenes and its role in deteriorating the environment and causing merciless deaths by choking the animals that swallow it along with food left over in such bags. Bhan said that these materials chock drains, thereby causing dirty water to flow on roads leading to extensive damage of the Macadamised roads.
Shopkeepers were warned not to use store or throw polythene bags as the same shall attract strict legal action under law including in the spot fine and imprisonment. Bhan further added that this department is here to enforce the ban in the large interest of environment protection and the public.
