Exposing the seriousness of the concerned department over the maintenance and security of the people, the overnight rains damaged the portion of ‘heritage’ Toshakhana at Mubarak Mandi.
According to reports, a part of Mubarak Mandi Toshakhana has ripped-off due to rains.
Meanwhile, the base of the Toshakhana is stable and there was no report of any losses to the human life.
Despite being declared as unsafe by the experts of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the concerned officials did not bother to take care of the area.
Official, wishing anonymity, claimed, “Several times they approached the administration and appealed for renovation of Toshakhana, but they did not pay any heed.”
Official said that in every monsoon, portions of Mubarak Mandi fell down and no one takes any
responsibility for it.
Executive Director, Mubarak Mandi Heritage Society, Rohit Khajuria said, “Only a portion of Toshkana fell due to rains.” Elaborating his point, he said in this building, an old office of Food and Supply was setup who later constructed an extra portion of roof for their convenience with the support of wall of Toshkhana as it’s a very old building and has its own  structure. The feeble structure could not handle the weight of the concrete, therefore due to slight accumulation of water on the roof top, it collapsed, he said.
Khajuria said that ASI already declared this whole building as unsafe. Restoration work is on progress and this would be restored by time. Ex-Mayor Narinder Singh Raju said, “This is not the first time when portion or wall of this building has collapsed, the concerned department is not interested to restore this building that’s why it took so many years in restoration work.” In 2006, then state government has shifted the invaluable monuments, 58-year old items of historic importance and manuscripts from Toshkhana Mubarak Mandi to a strong room in new secretariat Jammu in a temporary feature, Raju said. He said the shifting was aimed to place the historic and valuable treasure into a safe custody till suitable and permanent arrangements are made at the Mubarak Mandi heritage complex but till date no arrangements has been made so far.
