Sindhu sets her foot on homeland as ‘AP’s lovely daughter’

It’s Sindhu’s fever all the way when the Olympian medallist set her foot on her homeland on Tuesday after receiving an overwhelming honour on the soils of Telangana. Regardless of the ruckus on the social media over her origin, she was greeted by a huge banners describing her as ‘AP’s lovely daughter’ as Pusarla Venkata Sindhu emerged out of the Gannavaram airport.
Even as she arrived in a special flight along with her father Venkataramana, mother Vijayalakshmi and coach and mentor Pullela Gopichand on an invitation from the AP government for a civic reception in the city, a rousing reception was awaited outside the airport upon her arrival. A large number of sports, lovers, students, youths and the other general public waited outside the airport patiently to cheer the ‘daughter of the soil’ for a long time, braving searing heat and overzealous baton-wielding police. The serene airport ambience was marked by thunderous raptures when she came out from the airport. Her itinerary was delayed by two hours even as large crowds reached the airport premises before 8am, the original schedule. It became an agonising wait in the scorching sun for over two hours. But all their impatience and gruelling wait made way for jubilation with her arrival. Pushkara holidays declared by the AP state government for schools came handy for students to join the celebrations. As Sindhu boarded a double-decker open-top vehicle bedecked with flowers, hundreds of enthusiasts craned their heads up to take a glimpse of the ace badminton player. The vehicle had a banner bearing the pictures of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on the one side and Sindhu and her coach on the other in the front side. Even the top-notch political leaders who included Sports Minister K. Achchannnaidu, Rajahmundry MP and actor Maganti Muralimohan, his Machilipatnam, Eluru and Vijayawada counterparts Konakalla Satyanarayana, Maganti Venkateswara Rao (Babu) and Kesineni Nani literally jostled for space with the 21-year old girl in the “poola radham” (chariot decorated with flowers in Telugu).
Naidu please don”t waste money for Lavish felicitations for your own publicity.Instead do some meaningful work with that money like construct badminton academy on her name in every municipality.
Sindhu, who was born and brought up in Hyderabad in spite of the fact that her ancestral roots were in Vijayawada and the neighbouring Eluru in West Godavari district, moved on through the city’s thoroughfares waving to the cheering crowds in majesty. Of course, she visited the city some two years ago with already two world championships to her credit by that time to play in a shuttle tournament. But this time around she made it all the difference as a prodigal player receiving state honours with a red carpet rolled out for her.
It is obviously a moment of pride for Ramana to go with his daughter as the country’s first woman to enter the Olympic finals to pass through the city in which he grew up and moved round as a college student. After Telangana CM KCR and his AP’s counterpart Naidu, the BJP’s union development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu joined the race to honour her in the city which preceded the one held under the auspices of the state government.
