SKUAST-TAJ demands to enhance retirement age of varsity teachers

A meeting was held between the office bearers of SKUAST-Teaching Association Jammu (SKUAST-TAJ) under the leadership of its President, Dr. Vikas Sharma, in which association discuss the sole issue regarding the age of superannuation of faculty members of Universities. “In 2014 the then Hon’ble CM Sh. Omar Abdullah, had stated very clearly his government’s intention to bring the retirement age of varsity teachers and medical faculty at par with the retirement age of the faculty of Central Universities which is 65 years, with the provision of extension up to the age of 70, as per norms of the University Grants Commission (UGC), by considering the matter in the cabinet. But subsequently when the State Cabinet met on June 19, 2014, it fixed the age of superannuation of varsity and medical faculty at 62 years instead of earlier stated position. This decision of cabinet was resented by the university and medical faculty of the state at that time”, said TAJ president Dr. Vikas Sharma.
Dr. Vikas further informed that now the State Govt. revealed that it will process increasing age of doctors to 65 as superannuation age of all doctors in Central Health Service has been enhanced to 65 with effect from
31st May, 2016.
“At this point of time, the State Government should take the same action with regard to approximately 1200 teachers with four Universities of the State and bring their service conditions, including age of retirement, on a par with those of employees with Central Universities as laid down by the UGC “, stressed TAJ president. Moreover University and medical faculty are important constituents of the civil society and the disparity in the retirement age of the faculty of Central and State Universities should be removed. This step will empower the State Government to strengthen the education sector in the State and to retain experienced faculty for a longer period to provide quality education to the future of State/Nation The meeting was attended by Dr. Devinder Sharma and
Dr. Rajeev Bharat. Dr. Poonam Parihaar, Dr Jai Kapoor, Dr, Anil Bhatt and other executives.
