Soon after assuming the additional charge of the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS (Independent Charge) Youth Affairs & Sports, MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh issued instructions for expediting the upgradation of sports stadiums of Jammu, Srinagar and other parts of Jammu & Kashmir, for which Rs 200 crore has been earmarked by the Government of India.
Presiding over a review meeting of the Ministry on his first day in office, Dr Jitendra Singh said that the stadiums at Jammu and Srinagar will be raised up to international level which will require a cost of around Rs. 100 crore. The entire execution and upgradation of infrastructure for these two stadiums will be done directly by the Union Ministry of Sports, he said. In addition, Dr Jitendra Singh said, the stadiums at Poonch and Rajouri will also be upgraded and multi-purpose indoor halls for sports will be constructed at 12 different locations/districts of J&K in consultation with the State government. For upgradation of sports stadiums and halls other than in Jammu and Srinagar, he said, Union Sports Ministry will provide Rs. 100 crore to the State Government but the responsibility of executing the work will have to be taken up by the State Government itself.
Dr Jitendra Singh also took a serious note of delay in starting the work on Sports University at Manipur which he had been vigorously pursuing as DoNER Minister and which had been announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon after the formation of government in 2014. He instructed the Ministry officials to give the Manipur State Government a deadline of one month and said, if the State Government fails to clear the issues related to the land already identified, the union Sports Ministry will be constrained to look for alternative piece of land.
In another significant decision, Dr Jitendra Singh also issued instructions to prepare a proposal for the feasibility of upgradation of the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NIC) at Patiala to the level of University. The said proposal can then be taken up with the Ministry of Human Resources Development, he added.
Among those present at the meeting were Union Secretary Sports Rajeev Yadav, Additional Secretary Kiran Soni Gupta, Director General Nehru Yuva Kendra, Major General Dilawar Singh and senior officers of
the Department of Sports, Department of Youth Affairs and Sports Authority of India.
