Srinagar-Leh highway closed after fresh snowfall

The 434-km Srinagar-Leh highway was closed on Friday due to fresh snowfall in Zojila and Sonamarg areas.

Traffic on the strategic highway, the only road linking the frontier region of Ladakh with the rest of the state, was temporarily suspended after fresh snow caused slippery conditions.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway has pressed men and machinery into service to clear the road.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Captain BRO Niraj Kumar Singh said snowfall is still going on at Zojila and so far around nine inches of fresh snow have accumulated on the highway.

“We are on job and the highway will be thrown open for traffic as early as possible,” he said.
