The lack of basic infrastructure and an unsafe building are hallmarks of Sub-District Hospital Bijbehara. Both Health and Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department admitted that hospital building is unsafe patients and medical staff, yet government takes no measures repair or relocate the hospital.
The cracks in walls and ceiling are widening with each passing day and it has been declared unsafe by the R&B Department. With no alternative arrangement in place, the doctors have been forced to take care of patients from the building.
“After September 2014 floods, R&B Department declared this hospital building unsafe and yet we have been operating from this building,” Medical Superintendent Sub-District Hospital Bijbehara Dr Showkat Ahmed told news agency CNS.
“Repeated requests to the authorities concerned have not yielded any response,” claimed the hospital staff.
Assistant Executive Engineer R&B, Bijbehara Mr Mushtaq Ahmed said that they have taken up the issue with the government. “Yes, the hospital building is unsafe for patients and doctors. A year back we brought the issue into the notice of the government and hopefully something will be done,” he said.
When contacted, R&B Minister Abdul Rahman Veeray said, “The safety of the patinets is our priority. We will do everything for the safety of the people,” he said
