Srinagar, February 12: Summer capital, Srinagar and its outskirts finally received snowfall on Monday morning, ending the dry spell which has resulted in dry cold related diseases drop in the water level in water bodies.

Roof and tree tops besides open spaces and roads had turned white as people woke up this morning in Srinagar, where people were praying for wet weather after 40-day-long Chilai-Kalan, the severest period of the winter which ended on January 31, passed off almost without any snow and rain. However, the 20 day-long Chilai Khurd, which started after Kalan, has finally brought snow in the valley, including Srinagar.

This will be followed by ten-day-long Chilai Bacha from February 20. People were seen greeting each other while children were also out to enjoy the snowfall. The Met department had on Sunday afternoon predicted a fresh weather warning in Kashmir valley, where moderate to heavy rain and snow is expected to occur at many areas under influence of a fresh Western Disturbance (WD).

Divisional Administration spokesperson said that a fresh WD, which hit the region yesterday, will remain active till Tuesday. “Under the influence of this system, moderate to heavy rain or snow is expected at widespread places of Jammu, Kashmir and moderate snowfall in Ladakh, mainly Kargil district,” he said. He said higher reaches of Kashmir and Jammu most likely to receive moderate to heavy rain or snow. “This may lead disruption of surface transportation mainly Srinagar-Jammu national highway,” he said.
