‘Super Friday’ for sports fans as Indians create history Down Under

It turned out to be a “Super Friday” for Indian sports fans as the men in blue, the women in blue and Tennis ace Sania Mirza celebrated big wins Down Under.

First up the Indian women’s cricket team created history by defeating Australia by 10 wickets in the second T20 to secure their first bilateral series victory in any format over the hosts at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Senior pacer Jhulan Goswami and left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad starred with the ball as they restricted the Australians to 125/8 from 18 overs in the rain-affected contest. The visitors then followed it with a controlled chase as openers Mithali Raj and Smriti Mandhana pushed the score to 52/0 in the eighth over when it started rain. India ended up being ahead of the par score under Duckworth and Lewis and had to score only 14 more runs after the showers abated.

The Indian eves now lead the three-match series 2-0. They had beaten Australia by five wickets in the first match in Adelaide on January 26. The third T20 will be played in Sydney on January 31.

Sania-Hingis do it again

Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis continued their dream run as they were crowned the Australian Open women’s doubles champions after taming the spirited Czech duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in straight sets.

The top seeds fought past seventh seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 7-6 (1) 6-3 in the women’s doubles final that lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes.

It was their third consecutive Grand Slam title for Sania and Martina, having won the Wimbledon and US Open in the 2015 season.

In an incredible feat, Sania and Martina have now extended their unbeaten run to 36 matches, winning eight titles in a row. They won five straight titles in 2015, starting from the US Open and before the Australian Open today they had won Brisbane and Sydney events.

Dhoni’s boys gain redemption

The men in blue dominated with both bat and ball to beat Australia by 27 runs in the second Twenty20 International and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing three-match series.

India rode on half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to post 184/3 in their 20 overs. In reply, the Australians could only manage 157/8 despite being given a superb start by Aaron Finch.

The Indians have thus clinched the three-match series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.
