Srinagar, April 11
Security forces today achieved a major success when they arrested a top militant of Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT), tasked to carry out major attacks in Kulgam during bypoll in Anantnag Parliamentary constituency.
However, the polling, which was scheduled on April 12 in the constituency was deferred by Election Commission of India (ECI) following death of 8 persons in security force and police action during polling in Srinagar constituency on April 9. Official sources said that on a tip off security forces arrested a LeT commander Shakir Ahmad Yatoo. They said Shakir was given the task to carry out major strikes during bypoll in Anantnag constituency to keep people away from election process.
He was being questioned, they said adding it was a big catch. A senior police officer of district Kulgam said security forces raided a house in Kulgam on March 26 but Shakir gave slip. However, security forces recovered one Self Loading Rifle (SLR), magazine and rounds of ammunition which were snatched from a guard at Qazigund.
