A security red alert has been sounded in Katra and Jammu following the sighting of two suspects in army fatigues carrying backpacks at Domel area on the Jammu-Srinagar highway last night.
Reportedly the security agencies have also recovered army uniforms and boots lying in front of a shop near a small bridge at Domel Morh under the jurisdiction of police station Jhajjar Kotli which was probably thrown by the suspects.
After assessing the statements of locals who were claming to spot these suspects, the security agencies sprung to all preventive measures including sounding launching an intensive search operation in the area besides sounding high alert in the Katra and Jammu regions keeping in view the ongoing Vaishno Devi and the upcoming Amarnath yatra which will began from 2 July.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Sunil Gupta and SSP Reasi Sujit Kumar along with Special Operation Group (SOG) also reached the spot to review the situation and monitor the search operation.
During the search operation Army fatigues and boots were found under a bridge and it is being suspected that both the men have changed into casual clothes to hide their identity. They were carrying backpacks and when the locals found them suspicious, they informed the army and the police, however, the duo managed to escape.
Though, the police claimed recovery of only one army uniform and boots from the spot and assured that the suspects were genuine Army men who changed their dresses in front of the shop near the bridge and one of them left his army dress and boots there on being ragged.
Police even said that the duo army men’s were also seen earlier in the region by the owner of the said shop who claimed to see them while changing their dresses.
According to police the said shop is being run by the two partners and one of them namely Pankaj has also met with the same army men’s earlier also and even they used to change dresses in his shop before leaving for Vaishnodevi yatra. But this time they changed their dresses near the small bridge in front of his shop which was also spotted by him as at that time he was sitting at his shop.
But this claim of police itself is controversial and is raising several questions as why the duo changed their dresses near bridge if the shop was open and what was the urgency to change the dresses. Also, why and how they traveled from their respective homes or units by wearing such ragged and shabby army dresses and shoes which they thrown before moving to their destination.
If sources are to be believed it is quite possible that the two men were looking to make an entry into an army base at Katra or a nearby place to sabotage the upcoming amaranth yatra or ongoing vaishnodevi yatra.
Sources also said that police, SOG and other security agencies are concerned over the matter and are carrying out investigation to unfold the mystery of these two suspects.
Meanwhile, the security has been beefed up on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway also and special nakas have also been raised by both police and SOG with additional nafri to ensure complete security.
