Violence in Varanasi after cops, protesters clash; police vehicles set on fire

Hundreds and thousands of sadhus on Monday held a demonstration in Varanasi against the September 22 police baton-charge on a procession where they were heading to immerse Lord Ganesha’s idol in the Ganga. The police action led to widespread violence.

Hundreds of sadhus turned up for the Anyay Pratikaar Yatra at Town Hall ground, many people joined them to protest against the police action on September 22.

Moreover, from Maidagin to Bansphatak, demonstrations were being held on roads before police intervened to thwart the rally.

Demonstrators shouted slogans and marched till Dashashwamedh Ghat.

At around 4:30 pm, when the demonstrators reached Godaulia, the scene turned violent as police personnel canned the protesters mercilessly. People, in retaliation, set police vehicle ablaze and pelted stones at the police. They even burned down a police booth at Godaulia. The city turned into a violent zone with protesting people and cops locked in street fights.
