New Delhi, April 16
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while raising the triple talaq issue+ on Sunday, said that “justice should be done to Muslim women.”
“Our Muslim sisters should also get justice+ . Injustice should not be done with them. Nobody should be exploited,” PM Modi asserted while speaking at the BJP’s national executive meet in Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar.
“The Prime Minister said if there are social evils, the society should be woken up and efforts made to provide justice to the victims,” Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said while briefing reporters.
However, the PM made it clear that “there should not be any conflict in the Muslim community over this issue.”
“We do not want that there is conflict within the Muslim community over this issue. What we have to do is that if there are any social evils, we have to wake up the society and make efforts to provide justice to them (Muslim women). That was the Prime Minister’s spirit,” Gadkari said. Gadkari said that the PM spoke of building a society free of any social and economic inequality.
Earlier in the day, All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has issued a warning for those who give triple talaq without reasons+ prescribed by the Sharia (religious law).
“It has been decided in executive body meeting that those misusing triple talaq will face social boycott,” AIMLPB’s Maulana Khalid R Firangi said, adding, “There has been misunderstanding on this issue, we will issue a code of conduct on it.”
Last December, the Allahabad HC ruled+ that triple talaq violates the equality of women as provided by the Constitution.
The Supreme Court has set May 11-19 as the timeline to conclude hearings on the legality of triple talaq, signalling its resolve to decide on an issue with potentially severe socio-political implications. The court said it would hold daily sittings between May 11 and May 19 to decide pleas by Muslim women to declare the practice of oral talaq illegal.
