A 27-year-old man, who was picked up by police for his alleged involvement in several theft cases, died at a health centre after falling sick in custody in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday.
After Mohd Abid, a resident of Batote’s Thopal village, died, Ramban District Magistrate Baseer-ul-Haq Choudhary ordered a magisterial probe, which was to be finished in a week.
According to sources, Abid, who is reported to be a heroin addict, was taken by police a few days ago and complained of discomfort in the detention facility on Tuesday. He was then taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Batote, where he passed away.
After the post-mortem and other legal procedures are finished, the deceased’s body would be given to his family for final rites at the health centre, they said.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rizwan Asgar was designated by the district magistrate as an inquiry officer to carry out the independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Abid’s death.
“The inquiry officer shall look into the cause and circumstances that lead to the death of the individual and shall fix the responsibility of the same. He shall submit his report within a week’s time positively from the date of issue of this order,” Choudhary said in an order issued on Tuesday evening.
