Inquiry Launched into Alleged Timber Mismanagement in Kishtwar’s Marwah

Kishtwar: Authorities have initiated an official inquiry into alleged illegal deforestation and timber mismanagement in Marwah Division, Kishtwar. The probe follows concerns over discrepancies in the distribution of sanctioned wood sleepers in Compartment No. 39A, where locals claim they never received the allotted timber, despite official records stating otherwise.

Amid public outcry, the Forest Department has formed a fact-finding committee to investigate whether the timber was misappropriated or illegally diverted. A senior official assured that ground inspections and record verification are underway, with strict action promised against any wrongdoing.

The controversy deepened after a local forest guard, Sameer Ahmed, contradicted senior officials’ claims, stating there was no sanctioned timber distribution in the compartment. This has fueled suspicions of corruption and illegal logging.

Residents demand a transparent investigation, calling for independent oversight. Activists are urging the involvement of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Forest Department’s vigilance wing to ensure a fair probe. Some locals have also filed RTI applications to access timber allocation records.

The case underscores broader concerns about forest conservation and resource management in remote regions like Marwah. If the allegations are proven, it may expose deeper issues of timber smuggling and administrative lapses. As the inquiry progresses, the community awaits further updates, hoping for accountability and justice.
