Chandigarh, May 13: At least 14 individuals have died in Punjab’s Amritsar district after allegedly consuming illicit liquor, authorities reported on Tuesday. The fatalities were reported across five villages — Bhangali, Patalpuri, Marari Kalan, Therewal, and Talwandi Ghuman.
According to police, six other people are currently hospitalized with complications related to the toxic alcohol. Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney confirmed the deaths and stated that Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh visited the area to assess the situation.
Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. The accused have been identified as Prabhjit Singh — believed to be the main perpetrator — along with Kulbir Singh, Sahib Singh, Gurjant Singh, and Ninder Kaur. Authorities have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Excise Act.
