Protestors take out massive rally in Kargil

Thousands marching in Kargil to press govt for implementation of 6th schedule, statehood in Ladakh

On the protest call of Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) for a half-day general strike and expressing support with eminent education reformist Sonam Wangchuk, thousands of protestors on Wednesday took out massive a rally demanding completion of various demands in Ladakh’s Kargil district.

Thousands of agitators holding placards, banners marched through the streets of Kargil demanding statehood for the UT, implementation of the sixth schedule in the region and a separate ‘Public Service Commission’ (PSC) for the Himalayan region.

One of the agitators told media, “Since some past years when the Ladakh converted into a union territory the local people have been agitating under the banner of Apex Body Leh (ABL) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). We have been holding talks peacefully with govt maintaining decorum in the region while expressing our demands, but sadly the way govt is behaving with us from some days we will have to intensify our protest and we will go to any extent for the future of our children and Ladakh”.

“In the coming days, the KDA and ABL will prepare further strategies for the people and we will again put forward our demands to the new govt which will be formed after elections and if they didn’t paid heed to our issues, we will continue our protest”, he added.

One of the protestor holding a big flex with others while marching, said, “Our protest has been going on from four years and we have pressed for the implementation of 6th schedule and statehood in the protests. We ‘Ladakhis’ want to show that we have not retreated from pressing our demands and this agitation will gradually snowball in a movement and one day the Indian govt have to fulfill our demands”.

Eminent education reformist Sonam Wangchuk whose life inspired Aamir Khan’s character ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’ in 3 Idiots film is on hunger strike since 6 March in Leh demanding statehood for the UT, implementation of the sixth schedule in the region and a separate ‘Public Service Commission’ (PSC) for the UT.
