Srinagar, August 22: Reiterating the resolve of his party to restore statehood to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday regretted that it was the first time in the history of the independent India that a full-fledged state was downgraded into a Union Territory.

“Earlier some Union Territories were granted statehood but the J&K is the first unique case when a full-fledged state was downgraded into a UT”, Rahul said while addressing party workers in Srinagar to kick-start elections campaign for Assembly polls.

He emphasized that restoring statehood for Jammu and Kashmir is a top priority for the Congress party.

Gandhi addressed concerns about unemployment and lack of opportunities for the youth, promising that Congress would work towards addressing these challenges. He stressed that the party’s efforts to restore statehood are crucial and vowed to protect the constitution and alleviate the pain and fear felt by the people.

Commitment to Jammu and Kashmir

Gandhi reiterated that upon learning of the upcoming elections in JK, he and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge decided to visit the region first, signaling Congress’ commitment to representing J&K. He assured that any alliances would respect the views of party members and prioritize the interests of Congress workers and leaders.

Personal Bond and Fearless Work

Gandhi shared personal anecdotes, reflecting on his deep bond with the people of JK, and underscored that his efforts were personal rather than political. He praised Congress workers for their fearless work in the region and assured that their interests and respect would be protected.

Victory of Congress’ Ideology

Gandhi concluded by saying that the INDIA alliance had humbled Prime Minister Modi in parliamentary elections, calling it a victory of Congress’ ideology through unity and love. He left the youth of JK with the message: “In the market of hatred, we must open a shop of love.”

Upcoming Assembly Polls

The assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to be held in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1. The counting of votes will take place on October 4.

Congress Leaders’ Visit

Gandhi and Kharge received a rousing welcome from Congress workers and supporters upon their arrival at the airport on Wednesday. After wrapping up their interactions in Srinagar, the two leaders will fly to Jammu to hold discussions with party workers from the 10 districts in the Jammu region.
