PoJK Refugees’ Call for Scheduled Tribe Status like Paharis in Jammu and Kashmir

As discussed today in our Salaam JK segment on Gulistan News, https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1BTRJqTd6H/

The issue of reservation in Jammu and Kashmir remains unresolved. While the Cabinet sub-committee works on its report and the matter awaits a court decision, young voices from both Jammu and Kashmir are actively pushing for their demands. Political parties are also discreetly preparing for potential actions if no concrete resolution is reached.

Amidst this, refugees from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) have stepped into the spotlight, demanding the same Scheduled Tribe (ST) status recently granted to the Pahadi-speaking community. They argue that as Pahadi-speaking people, their historical and linguistic roots make them equally eligible for the benefits extended to the Pahadi group.

POJK refugees have reached out to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Lieutenant Governor, and other key officials, urging recognition and justice. In the coming days, they plan to meet leaders like former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to bolster their case and highlight their plight.

This demand is gaining momentum, with expectations of protests in Jammu and even Delhi if no action is taken. Refugee groups are preparing for demonstrations outside political offices and plan to sustain their campaign until their voices are heard.

The situation grows more complex as youth groups and social organizations warn of street protests if the broader issue of open merit and reservation remains unresolved. The government faces mounting pressure, with deadlines from courts and heightened public demands threatening to escalate into widespread unrest.
