Padma Shri Recipient Baba Sivanand Passes Away in Varanasi

Varanasi, May 4: Renowned spiritual leader and Padma Shri awardee Baba Sivanand has passed away in Varanasi due to health-related issues. According to his disciples, he was 128 years old.

He was admitted to BHU Hospital on April 30 following medical complications and breathed his last on Saturday night. His body has been brought to his residence in Kabirnagar Colony, where the public can pay their final respects. His disciples confirmed that the last rites will be held later this evening.

Baba Sivanand was born on August 8, 1896, in the Sylhet district, now part of Bangladesh. Orphaned at the age of six due to starvation, he adopted a life of discipline and simplicity from an early age. He reportedly ate only small portions and adhered to a strict routine throughout his life.

He was raised by Omkarnand, who guided him in spiritual teachings and mentored him in the path of asceticism. Honored with the Padma Shri in 2022, Baba Sivanand was celebrated for his significant contributions to yoga and spiritual practice.

His followers attribute his long and healthy life to his ascetic lifestyle — waking up at 3 a.m., practicing yoga, eating only boiled food, and sleeping on a mat. He lived independently and remained active well into old age.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences on social media, calling Baba Sivanand’s passing deeply saddening. “His unwavering dedication to yoga is a tremendous inspiration for all,” he wrote, offering prayers for his soul’s peace and strength for his followers during this difficult time.
