President Xi and President Putin Hold Crucial Call on Escalating Middle East Crisis

Beijing, June 20, 2025 —

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation on Thursday to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, following recent tensions sparked by Israel’s reported attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

President Putin expressed deep concern over the escalating crisis, describing the Israeli strike as “extremely dangerous.” He emphasized that continued conflict is not in the interest of any party and called for a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue. Stressing the safety of foreign nationals in the region, Putin voiced Russia’s willingness to maintain close coordination with China to help deescalate tensions and safeguard regional peace.

President Xi Jinping echoed similar concerns, calling the situation “highly perilous” and warning that further escalation could inflict heavy losses not just on the direct parties, but also on the broader region. He stated that the crisis once again highlights the onset of a new phase of global instability.

Xi proposed a four-point approach to defuse tensions:

Immediate Ceasefire: Xi urged a halt to hostilities, particularly by Israel, emphasizing that violence will only deepen animosity and risks triggering a wider conflict.

Civilian Protection: Stressing international law, he called for the protection of civilians and the safe evacuation of third-country nationals. Indiscriminate attacks, he said, are unacceptable.

Return to Dialogue: Xi underscored the need to resume negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, asserting that dialogue remains the only viable path to lasting peace.

Global Efforts for Peace: The Chinese President called on the international community, especially influential powers, to act responsibly. He urged the UN Security Council to play a more active role in calming the crisis.

Both leaders reaffirmed the strength of China-Russia relations, praising their strategic coordination and mutual trust. They agreed to intensify high-level exchanges and cooperation across multiple sectors, aiming to further deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership.

President Xi concluded by reiterating China’s readiness to work with all stakeholders to promote peace and stability in the Middle East, stressing the need for justice, diplomacy, and constructive engagement.
