BJP bets on sitting MPs in J&K

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) yesterday named the two sitting Member of Parliaments (MPs) from the Union Territory (UT) as their candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha (LS) elections.

Jitendra Singh from Udhampur and Jugal Kishore Sharma from Jammu LS constituency have been named by the BJP’s Central Election Committee as their candidates.

J&K has a total of five LS seats including Jammu, Udhampur, Srinagar, Baramulla and Anantnag.

Jitendra Singh, a doctor by profession, had for the first time won the LS seat from Udhampur constituency in 2014 and then again in 2019. Similarly, Jugal Kishore Sharma had won both the elections from Jammu LS constituency. Both Jammu and Udhampur are considered to be bastions of the BJP.

Jitendra Singh, a high profile figure, who is a resident of Jammu city and a Union Minister, has many important portfolios in his kitty. He is Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ministry of Science and Technology, PMO, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space.

Even Jugal Kishore Sharma was able to defeat Congress candidates in both the polls with a significant margin.

While the BJP has declared two heavy-weights from Jammu and Udhampur, the opposition Congress is likely to follow in the coming days. The Congress is still in talks with the National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) — for three seats in Kashmir division. The Congress is likely to contest from the two seats in Jammu division.

Jitendra Singh, a doctor by profession, won the Lok Sabha seat for first time from Udhampur constituency in 2014 and then again in 2019.

Jugal Kishore Sharma defeated the Congress candidates from Jammu constituency in 2014 and 2019 polls with a significant margin.
